First robotic gallbladder surgery performed at Park Ridge hospital

PARK RIDGE — Drs. Joubin Khorsand and John McKenzie have successfully completed the first single-site robotic-surgery procedure for gallbladder removal at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, according to a news release.
The surgery, which took less than an hour, is performed using the DaVinci Si Robotic Surgery System. Using just one incision into the belly button the gallbladder can be removed with no permanent scarring, the release stated.
For the nearly a million Americans who need gallbladder-removal surgery this new surgical option will allow them to recover from surgery and return to their normal routines sooner than if they had chosen to have traditional laparoscopic surgery, the release stated.
Benefits of single-site robotic surgery reportedly include: Virtually no scarring; minimal pain; low blood loss; and less post-operative pain.
“Advocate Lutheran General Hospital has two DaVinci Si robots and 26 physicians trained to perform 30 different robotic surgeries, offering the most comprehensive Robotic Surgery Program in the area,” the release stated.
