Boundary changes on horizon for 3rd, 4th wards in Park Ridge

PARK RIDGE — For the first time in 20 years Park Ridge will experience a redrawing of city ward boundaries.
Changes call for an extension of the southern boundary of the 3rd Ward into the 4th Ward, affecting a little more than 250 4th Ward residents living in the area of Maine Park south of Sibley Avenue and north of Cherry Street, said City Clerk Betty Henneman.
The new boundaries will be in effect for the April 9, 2013, aldermanic election. Though there is no race in the 3rd Ward, the 4th Ward seat, now held by Alderman Sal Raspanti, is up for election.
The purpose of the redrawing is to help keep the population of each city ward fairly equal, Henneman said. The 2010 census showed a higher number of residents in the 4th Ward than in the 3rd Ward, she added.
“Anytime there’s a census we look at the numbers,” Henneman explained. “Ten years ago they were all pretty close so I didn’t recommend any changes.”
Residents affected by the ward change are expected to receive notification prior to the election next spring. The Park Ridge City Council will also need to update the city’s municipal code to reflect the new boundaries of the 3rd and 4th Ward, Henneman said.~.
