THE SKINNY

The second-seeded Maine South boys basketball team scored all of its points in the paint, at the line or from behind the arc in a 70-45 victory over No. 7 Niles North in Friday’s Class 4A Niles North Regional title game. Maine South is scheduled to play third-seeded Evanston on Wednesday in the sectional semifinals at Maine South. The Hawks beat the Wildkits (21-8) twice during the regular season.

TURNING POINT

Trailing 23-17 halfway through the second quarter, Niles North (15-15) drew up an inbounds play for senior guard Duante Stephens — an alley-oop tossed from the baseline. Stephens missed, and the ball bounced off the rim. Maine South sophomore guard Jon Arenas took the rebound down the court for a layup and was fouled. Arenas then sank the free throw. Niles North brought the score within five a few minutes later, but the Vikings could never get it closer.
