At 51, the Skokie Art Guild’s annual art festival is one of the oldest and best-established annual shows in the area — and it’s still going strong.
See for yourself when a wide range of artists from greater Illinois, Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, even some from other parts of the country, display their wares July 14 and 15 on the Village Green in downtown Skokie.
“It’s a juried show, with prizes and awards, so there’s always a good variety of high-caliber work — photography, oil painting, jewelry, glasswork, ceramics, you name it,” said Chairperson Barbara Willerman. “People look forward to this every year.
“It’s a high-quality show, but it’s also a fun show. People always have a good time. In addition to the excellent art, we have entertainment and activities like face painting and refreshments. A lot of people make a day of it.”
Pablo Warren of Skokie, an Art Guild member since the late ’60s, has set up shop at the fest nearly every year since 1992, exhibiting his whimsical three-dimensional wall-hangings. “I enjoy painting, I enjoy sculpture, so I combined the two,” he said.
“It’s a great festival,” Warren added. “They always have good stuff and a nice variety of artists and there’s always a friendly atmosphere. Lots of very nice people. Some people come for the art and some come just because it’s something to do on the weekend. Whatever the reason, it’s always a good time,
“And it doesn’t hurt that it’s free,” he added with a laugh. “That’s always a nice inducement. Especially these days.”
