Correctly spelling the word “announcement” led to the actual announcement that Sarah Skolozynski was the 2012 winner of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic School’s fourth-grade spelling bee.
The bee, held May 31 at the Park Ridge school, included 13 participants selected to compete based on their performance in a pre-spelling bee in April. They included Skolozynski, runner-up Ian Coyle, Marie Tagliavia, Kathryn Stangel, Katie Bachert, Mairead O’Kane, Allison Fronczak, Lauren Capek, Marco Perfetti, Anthony Perfetti, Ryan Wolfe, Sarah Whitelaw and Emma Ferstel.
Judges for the event were teachers Peggy Godley, Noreen Gayford and Roseanne Dulski. Principal Lorelei Bobroff and teacher Stephanie Youkhana were pronouncers.
Words selected for the championship round came from the fourth-grade National Spelling Bee list, Youkhana said. Skolozynski and Coyle completed 10 challenge-round words before Skolozynski was declared champion of the bee.
“This year’s fourth grade are a great group of kids who really take pride in what they do,” Youkhana said.
