PARK RIDGE — Park Ridge Mayor David Schmidt is opening his home this weekend to supporters and citizens interested in volunteering on his 2013 re-election campaign.
A barbecue will take place Sunday, Sept. 23 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the mayor’s home, 700 Hansen Place.
“The purpose of the barbecue is to thank the volunteers who helped me get elected and to thank the people who have signed up on my e-mail list and have been sending me their comments over the years,” Schmidt said. “It’s also to let people know what my plans are for the upcoming election.”
Though Schmidt had indicated in the past his plans to run for a second term, Sunday’s gathering will essentially formalize that decision.
“I assumed all along I would probably run, but I would say, as of now it’s definite,” the mayor said.
Schmidt was elected mayor in 2009 after serving two years as alderman of the 1st Ward. He is expected to face at least one opponent in the mayoral race: political newcomer and community volunteer Larry Ryles. Ryles, who currently serves on the Park Ridge-Niles School District 64 Community Finance Committee, established a campaign fund in June.
Filing of petitions for local offices begins Dec. 17 and concludes Dec. 24.
