PARK RIDGE — Millikin University in Decatur last year honored Park Ridge residents Herbert and Barbara Zuegel as co-recipients of the 2012 Alumnus of the Year Award, the highest alumni award presented by the university.

Herb Zuegel, class of 1952, and Barbara Burgis Zuegel, class of 1953, were honored for their commitment and dedication to Millikin through years of financial support and service. The Zuegels established the Zuegel Business Information Technology endowment fund for the Tabor School of Business and supported the fund during capital campaigns. They have also supported the proposed new university center and the university’s Millikin Fund.

The Zuegels have assisted in planning alumni activities in Springfield and Chicago for more than 30 years. They have co-hosted a dinner for the Millikin Women’s Choir and hosted choir members as house guests. They have also served as members of the Parent Board and as voluntary admission counselors. Herb Zuegel has previously served on his class reunion committee and is the agent for fundraising for the class of 1952.

Herb Zuegel received Millikin’s Young Alumnus Award in 1965 and he and Barbara also received the Alumni Loyalty Award in 1990.

The couple met at a railway station in Chicago while waiting for the train to take them to Millikin University when they were students. They have been married 58 years.

Herb Zuegel is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Kalo Foundation in Park Ridge.
