Missing five shots to open the second quarter was not part of the game plan when Glenbrook South faced Central Suburban South foe Maine South Friday night.
The mini-dry spell turned into a full-fledged drought the Titans could not solve, and they trailed the rest of the way, eventually dropping a 57-42 decision in Glenview.
Glenbrook South trailed just 10-9 after the first quarter, but the Titans’ scoreless stretch of almost three minutes to start the second allowed the Hawks to take control of the game.
Forward Justin Busiel was the only Titan to reach double-figures in scoring, connecting on 6-of-9 attempts to finish with 15 points. He added three rebounds.
“We have a couple of great shooters, like (Matt) Siegel and Jamie (Nikitas) — those guys all can stroke it most times,” said Busiel, a forward. “It just was not our night. In the first half, we got open shots, but in the second half we just started to force it, and just kind of got frustrated. It kind of fell apart.”
Nikitas knocked down a three-pointer in the first quarter and added three more baskets, finishing with nine points and three steals.
The Titans (5-16, 1-7) fell behind by double digits at the start of the second half, but were able to trim the deficit to 37-30 on a Busiel bucket with just over three minutes left in the third period. Glenbrook South got no closer the rest of the way.
“We had a few of those runs that brought us really close, but in the end we could not defend them,” Busiel said. “We were giving up post after post, and they kept pounding us inside, and it was just too much. We just could not get consecutive stops.”
Maine South’s John Solari did most of the inside damage, collecting 11 of his 17 points in the third quarter, when the Hawks (15-10, 4-4) extended the lead to 42-30. Matt Lahey led Maine South with 20 points.
Ose Ilenikhena provided another bright spot for the Titans. The junior knocked down a three-pointer and had seven of his nine tallies in the final stanza.
“He is turning the corner,” said Glenbrook South coach Scott Nemecek. “Ose, at times, has been a little timid, but he is breaking out of his shell. It has been nice to see, and he has done it a little more consistently. So we definitely need to look to him to continue that.”
The lead swelled to 18 points in the final minute before Chris Jenkins capped the scoring for Glenbrook South, burying a three-pointer with eight seconds left.
