Softball: Loyola defense blanks Maine South

SOFTBALL: On days when your pitcher doesn’t have her best stuff, you’d better play rock-solid defense and scratch out some runs. That’s exactly what Loyola (22-7) did in a 3-0 win over Maine South (14-21), in a Class 4A regional title game Saturday.

WOMEN’S TRACK: Maine South graduate Kristen Zillmer twice qualified for the state finals in the 800 meters and was a standout on the cross country team. She’s now helping Illinois State to national prominence. The sophomore recently captured the Missouri Valley Conference championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:35.82.

GIRLS SOCCER: Leslie Hannon scored in the team’s 7-0 win over Taft in the regional semifinal at Maine South and then headed in the first goal in the Hawks’ 3-2 overtime victory over St. Ignatius in the championship match. It was the program’s sixth regional title in a row.

GIRLS SOCCER: The Maine East girls soccer team went just 2-15-1 this season, which ended May 16 when the No. 14-seeded Blue Demons suffered a 9-0 defeat to No. 3 Lane in the Class 3A Evanston regional semifinal.
